Specialty Metals Company, (SMC) based in Englewood, CO, has been processing Automobile Shredder Residue, (ASR) since 2012. SMC was founded by Craig and Scot Uhrig, the former owners of one of the largest full-service scrap processing facilities in the Rocky Mountain Region. Their core business was operating a mega shredder that produced over 300 TPH of mill ready steel shred, Zorba and Zurik. Even equipped with the latest and technologically advanced downstream equipment, there was still a significant amount of nonferrous metals remaining in the ASR. This led to further efforts to develop a process to capture, recover, and liberate the remaining valuable metals from the ASR. After a few years as an R&D facility, SMC was successful and began processing ASR from additional shredders.
Situated on over 7.5 acres with majority of their processing equipment housed in a 50,000 sq. ft. building, SMC is able process over 10,000 tons of ASR each month. In addition to ASR, SMC also processes all grades of Insulated Copper Wire including shredder or sensor wire from an automobile shredder’s nonferrous downstream.
In the summer of 2018, SMC will be expanding their current plant to increase their capacity by dedicating a processing center for insulated copper wire. Their new processing line will allow them to handle materials that were traditionally export products, this will include sensor wire, lower grade insulated copper wire, and wire products containing iron, stainless steel, and other contaminates.
